BERES HAMMOND HEADLINES ‘GROOVIN IN THE PARK’ MUSIC FESTIVAL IN NYC WITH ICONS R KELLY & JIMMY CLIFF

On Sunday July 1st, reggae’s timeless idol Beres Hammond will ignite New York City with musical flames when he headlines the annual “Grooving In The Park…A day of Reggae Rhythm and Blues” at Roy Wilkins Park in Queens. Hammond will share the stage with veteran reggae icon, the Hon. Jimmy Cliff OM, Boyz To Men and reigning R&B king R Kelly.

“I am very excited about the lineup. The acts we have booked so far – Jimmy, R Kelly, Boyz II Men and Beres – represents the best of reggae and R&B and I am confident they will deliver a spectacular concert for fans. We are still looking to add more acts to complete the lineup, ” said event CEO Christopher Roberts, of Groovin Inc.

Six years ago – the last time the ‘Boss’ Beres Hammond was in town to perform at an outdoor music festival – fans welcomed him with open arms and thunderous applause continued throughout the duration of his set. Supported by the Harmony House Band, the reggae balladeer ran through hits like “Rockaway,” “In Love With You,” “What On Dance Can Do,” “She Loves Me Not,” “Step Aside” “Double Trouble” and “Putting Up Resistance.” Hammond’s stellar career was launched in the 70′s with the release of his monster hit “One Step Ahead,” which stayed at number one on the charts over for 14 weeks. In the 80′s he scored with “What One Dance Can Do,” “Tempted to Touch” and subsequent albums “Love Affair,” “Full Attention” (1993), “In Control” (1994), “Love From a Distance” (1996) and “A Day In The Life” (1998). His 2001 disc “Music is Life” was warmly embraced by fans globally and included the number one hit “Rock Away.” The success of the album led to a series of high profile sold out appearances at the world famous Madison Square Gardens. Hammond is ripe for another stellar set in NY so fans can fasten their seat belts and be prepared to be ‘Rocked Away’ with some sweet, soulful, reggae music at Hammond’s first and only New York performance this year.

Rhythm and Blues legend R. Kelly is a master producer, composer and performer and he is known for delivering music that is spiritual, inspirational and extremely sexual. He made his mark with smash hits like “I Believe I Can Fly,” “World’s Greatest” for the 1996 summer Olympics in Atlanta; and a duet with French-Canadian pop diva Celine Dion, which catapulted him to international stardom. He has also enjoyed great commercial success, recording collaboration tracks with Jay-Z’s “Not Guilty” and Kelly’s “Fiesta Remix.” Fans are hyped and ready for an extraordinary performance from the R&B crooner who will be returning to NY for his first performance since his “Best of Both Worlds” concert with Jay Z in 2004.

Jimmy Cliff

Music legend Jimmy Cliff created history in 2010 when he became the first Jamaican performer since Bob Marley to be inducted in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The talented actor, musician, singer, songwriter, music producer and businessman is arguably the most celebrated reggae act alive on the international stage. He regularly plays stadiums and arenas in Africa, Brazil and parts of Europe and has an equally impressive following in the USA where he is best known for songs like “Sitting in Limbo,” “You Can Get It If You Really Want,” “Wild World,” “I Can See Clearly Now” and “Many Rivers to Cross.”

Boyz II Men

Grammy award winning R&B vocal group Boyz II Men are regarded as one of the most successful of all time. The group, best known for emotional ballads and a cappella harmonies, gained international notoriety with their 1992 hit single “End of The Road” which remained at the #1 position on the Billboard Hot 100 charts for 13 weeks. The group reaped further success with hits “I’ll Make Love To You,” “One Sweet Day (with Mariah Carey) and On Bended Knee.” Their most recent studio album, “Twenty” was released in 2011.

With the event taking place on Sunday, July 1st during the American Independence celebrations and with Jamaica and Trinidad both celebrating 50th anniversaries this year, concert organisers say the festival will serve as a tribute to these three great nations. Detailed plans of the tribute will be announced soon.

8.19.2012 | 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm | Central Park | Directions to Event >

Celebrate Jamaica’s 50th anniversary of independence with this day of Jamaican reggae music.

To anyone who’s familiar with Inner Circle, the GRAMMY® winning band’s 20-year-plusInner Circle history in reggae has had a long string of successes. Inner Circle’s special brand of pop-oriented Jamaican beats and energy-filled live performances have allowed the band to transcend the traditional reggae niche and enjoy widespread crossover appeal. From the launch of their first album in 1978 entitled, Everything Is Great, to the launch of the album, Bad Boys which became an international hit featuring the title track as well as the dance party favorite “Sweat,” Inner Circle’s brand of unforgettable hooks and island beats has kept the band a mainstay in the reggae world.

The story of reggae group Israel Vibration‘s success starts out with their humble beginnings as children battling polio in a Jamaican rehabilitation center. Cecil Spence (Skelly) and Lascelle Bulgin (Wiss) bonded through music while in the clinic and quickly became friends. As the duo got older, they found the faith of Rastafari and created songs which expressed their spiritual beliefs. Since then, the duo’s music has been spellbinding audiences for over two decades with their mix of traditional roots reggae and deeply spiritual messages such as the critically acclaimed album, On The Rock and its follow-up Free To Move, which reached number one on the CMJ New World charts.

The Mighty Diamonds are the most consistent and long-running reggae trio in Jamaican musical history. For over forty years the group has been entertaining and educating the world with their conscious lyrics, soulful harmonies and polished performances that led them to become known as the reggae group with the Motown sound. Their debut album Right Time, has become a reggae classic while the single, “Pass the Kutchie” from the album Changes, became an international hit and has since been covered by reggae group, Musical Youth whose version “Pass the Dutchie” also garnered fame globally. With over forty albums released, the group remains a favorite of the dance hall crowd, roots and progressive audiences.

Head DJ of ESummer Stageastern Standard Time on WKCR 89.9 FM in New York CityDJ Carter Van Pelt is a true student of Jamaican music of every era, from ska to dancehall. He’ll celebrate Jamaica’s 50th Anniversary with far-ranging selections covering every era. His WKCR program has earned a worldwide reputation for bringing artists to the studio for historic interviews, augmented with deep cuts, all played from vinyl. Van Pelt is the founder/producer of the popular Coney Island Reggae Soundsystem Series, held each summer on the iconic Coney Island Boardwalk. He also hosts a program on the Internet station Radio Lily.

Actor/Singer Leon to Perform in NYC for a Noteworthy Cause

The Five Heartbeats

New York City is in for a treat on Wednesday, December 13, 2011 when Actor/singer, LEON will remove his acting hat and replace it with that of “Artist.”  Known for his roles in movies such as Cool Runnings,” “Above the Rim,” “Waiting to Exhale,” “The Temptations,” “Little Richard,” “The Five Heartbeats,” along with television series “OZ” and Resurrection Boulevard,” LEON will perform live, for a worthy cause, with his band “Leon & the Peoples” at Sullivan Hall.

LEON became lead singer of his own band, Leon & the Peoples in 2005 and went on to release their debut album, “The Road Less Traveled” in 2006. In 2007, the band received a nomination for the album from the International Reggae and World Music Award. Later that year, the band joined Beres Hammond and Marcia Griffiths on their thirty six city US tour, For The Love Of It Tour. The Actor remarks, “I am never too busy to do something charity related. I am more than happy to lend assistance because the work is so important. I am urging everyone to come out and support this cause. Give A Gift, Change A Life, Make A Difference. This is what Christmas is about, giving to those who cannot afford to do so otherwise.”

Island Life In Atlanta Is Now A Reality

1

New York Life kicks off Island Life Friday Event

A new beginning is underway in the heart of Atlanta’s Buckhead community.  Buckhead is the district in the northern section of Atlanta most famous for its nightlife, despite the recent closure of numerous nightclubs.  In the area formerly known as Buckhead Village, massive construction projects are transferring the area into The Streets of Buckhead, an upscale shopping area similar to Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.

From the time of the 1996 Olympic games which Atlanta hosted in all its glory up until the January 2004 debut of the 3 a.m. closing time for Atlanta nightclubs, local party-goers and tourists alike took to the streets of Buckhead nightly  to partake of the many options in high-energy dance clubs. It was during that era that Highlanda Sound System was birthed and became Atlanta’s premier mainstream choice for Dancehall /Reggae Disc-jockeys.

Of the many successful events that Highlanda was involved with, one Friday night “bashment” in particular, Fantasy Island at The Deux Plex, still stands as the most nostalgic and probably most talked about Caribbean party thus far.  Here, for 18 consecutive Fridays from 2003 – 2004, Highlanda, working with Extreme Media attracted and performed for a diverse crowd of 800 – 1400 patrons weekly.

Bringing it up to the present, Krushmore Entertainment, Mixx Promotions, CaribbeanVibes.com, AtlantaDancehall.com, and MyPartyVibes.com present Island Life at Life Nightclub located at 1789 Cheshire Bridge Road (venue formerly known as The Deux Plex).  This summer promises to be hot in more ways that one as the 4th of July party weekend kick-off appropriately entitled New York Life features the sounds of Massive B from Hot 97FM in NYC alongside Highlanda.  This will definitely be Massive B with Bobby Konders himself on the 1′s and 2′s and DJ Lion Chef (Primal, Bentley’s, Icon Lounge) is also on the bill to provide the early warm up vibes.

From the Streets of East Flatbush

Brooklyn Sky's Hawks T-Shirt

From the streets of East Flatbush, Brooklyn comes your next favorite T-Shirt line.  If you live in Flatbush you know that I am referring to Brooklyn Sky.  This up and coming, yet trendy, line was started by Michael Nicholas and Matthew Jones in a college dorm room in 2005.  Brooklyn Sky is an innovative line that draws its influence from everyday life in Brooklyn.  Nicholas, the line’s designer is definitely in tune with the rhythm of the streets of Brooklyn.  Some larger companies have tried to tap into that same energy, but have failed as their products have not connected with “the hood”, so to speak.

BSky, as the line is sometimes referred to, also shows their loyalty to the community by hosting small gatherings at the shop from time to time.  The modest 350 sq. ft. store is located in the heart of Flatbush, on Nostrand Ave.  They have recently launched a Kids line at a family fun day that they hosted for the community.  Not only do they support the surrounding community, but they have also donated funds to Haiti relief after the recent devastation took place in Port Au Prince.  Nicholas designed a Haiti relief shirt in which proceeds are going directly to various charities involved in the recovery effort.  The T-Shirts were released at a clothing and food drive for the relief effort, which was organized by Brooklyn Sky and SNL Promotions.

Haiti Relief T-Shirt by Brooklyn Sky

Needless to say, the buzz on the streets for Brooklyn Sky is at a fever pitch.  Artists such as Young Jeezy, Rick Ross, Fabolous, and Lil Wayne have accepted the brand.  BSky has also been spotted on local celebs such as DJ Magic, the SNL boyz, and DJ Young Chow, to name a few.  I have been known to wear a few Brooklyn Sky pieces myself.

If you want to check out some of their stuff go to www.BSkyBrand.com.  I’m sure that you will see something that you like.  Until next time.

Well the summer season is upon us and, needless to say, there are many different things going on.  Up until this point, this blog has dealt with mostly three different categories.  The Atlanta reggae scene, the worldwide reggae scene, and Highlanda Sound System.  Well I am here to add yet another category, the New York scene.  While I will be concentrating on mostly Caribbean topics, I will be covering an array of things.  It will be a true representation of what’s happening in New York from a Caribbean-American’s point of view.

Some of you are probably wondering who is Crisis Don.  Well I am one of the co-founders of Highlanda Sound System, along with Kahlil Wonda and Super PEC.  I have lived in New York City most of my life and I have a deep appreciation for the city.  You will find out more about my sensibilities as I delve into various topics.  And what are some of those topics you ask?  Well there are parties, clubs, lounges, promoters, artists, music, fashion, dining out, and just hanging out, to name a few.  So check in from time to time to see what we are doing and what you should be doing.  You won’t have to wait long for my first post.

Chino Nominated For IRAWMA Award

Reggae and Dancehall artiste Chino has scored yet another achievement. The artiste who has accumulated a number of awards including those at the EMEs, Youth View Awards and Magnum Stone Love Awards in recent months, has again been nominated, this time for an IRAWMA award.

Chino, whose correct name is Daniel McGregor, was nominated in the category ‘Most Improved Entertainer’ at this year’s 29th International Reggae & World Music Awards, (IRAWMA). Chino says, “When I heard I couldn’t help but smile. I feel really blessed for people to appreciate my work. I’ve been in the music industry for as long as I can remember; some people may remember me as ‘Cappachino’ an’ dem time deh a lot of people refused to even give a second glance no matter how good a song was. But nothing beats persistence, and I stuck with it. It’s been a long journey, an’ as we say ‘from mawnin wi a hustle an’ put we all in’. It’s not just a song. It’s my life; so I’m really appreciative to the fans, the media, the selectors and everybody both here and overseas for showing love.”

The singjay who is known for hits ranging from From Mawnin’, Protected, Ruff It Up, Pon Yuh Head, and more, will attend the event staged by Martin’s International & Associates on Sunday, May 2 at the York College Performing Arts Center in New York. This year’s IRAWMA ceremony is dedicated to the People of Haiti and Health Awareness.

Beenie Man, Tanya, and Anthony Cruz, Bring Back the Vibes to Junction

The ‘King of the Dancehall’ Beenie Man and Dancehall’s ‘rebelution’ leader Tanya Stephens will cruise through the
hills of St. Elizabeth this December

King Of The Dancehall

King Of The Dancehall

Junction, the once bustling business center of Jamaica‘s second largest parish, will now be known as the area’s entertainment center when the ‘King of the Dancehall’ Beenie Man, Dancehall’s ‘rebelution’ leader Tanya Stephens, Lover’s Rock crooner Anthony Cruz, and Roots chanter Prestige cruise through St. Elizabeth’s rolling country-side for Cruz-in’ in Da Hills on December 19th. Instead of taking the show to ‘town’ (Kingston) or one of the other popular entertainment locations throughout the island, New York-based Triple T Production opts to kick-off the island’s Holiday entertainment festivities against the backdrop of Jamaica’s naturally beautiful rural landscape, and hopes to jump start activity in St. Elizabeth’s struggling business epicenter.

Cruz-in’ in Da Hills promises to be the featured holiday event in St. Elizabeth, boasting a diverse line up of Island’s talents, from the up- tempo anthems of Grammy-winning internationally recognized Dancehall deejay Beenie Man, to the soulful spoken word influenced tunes of sing-jay Tanya Stephens. Cruz-in’ in Da Hills also marks the birthday of silky-sweet singer Anthony Cruz. The three entertainers, along with Roots soldier Prestige, will make their way to Junction, an area that has seen a decline in economic and social activity in recent years.

“Junction is like ‘town’ to St. Elizabeth, it’s a central area, close to Black River,” states Tasz Smith, CEO of Triple T Production, whose family hails from St. Elizabeth and neighboring parish Manchester. “Junction used to be the place where everyone in the surrounding areas came for business, or church, or social activities-it is like a connecting point.”

Historically, St. Elizabeth, named for=2 0the wife of Jamaica’s first English Governor, was one of Jamaica’s most prosperous parishes, with Black River becoming an important seaport for shipping sugar and molasses, and becoming the center of the logging trade. In the 1960′s, St. Elizabeth became a major producer of bauxite and aluminum. Today, the parish is a popular tourist destination, with some of the island’s most beautiful tourist attractions like Treasure Beach, the Black River Safari, YS River Falls, Bamboo Avenue, and the Appleton Rum Distillery. St. Elizabeth is also the home of Little Ochi, an area in Alligator Pond noted for its excellent seafood.

While Junction is far from a tourist hot spot, Junction is a key attraction to the residents of St. Elizabeth, who find it necessary to visit the area regularly for shopping, vending, socializing, and to conduct business. Junction, unlike many other places in Jamaica, has also remained relatively crime free, with many houses and stores without burglar bars or grills, an uncommon phenomenon in today’s society.

“Junction is a cozy town, and the people are very close-knit and welcoming,” states Smith. “We want Cruz-in’ In Da Hills to bring back a vibe to Junction-to re-energize the area.”

Cruz-in’ In Da Hills featuring Beenie Man, Tanya Stephens, Anthony Cruz and Prestige will be held on Saturday, December 19th in Junction, St. Elizabeth. For more information, contact Triple T Production at 1-917-617-0874US/ 1- 876-419-0141JA or log on to www.tripletproduction.com.
