Review, Video & Pics: Cham Live in Atlanta

Early Warm

Mix Master David in the mix.

At around 1:45 am Mix Master David transitioned from uptempo 90’s dancehall juggling to the one drop beat of lovers rock and culture with Beres Hammond‘s hit ”I Feel Good” followed by Romain Virgo‘s “Can’t Sleep” on the same riddim getting good crowd response.  At 2:30 a.m. MMD took it back to basics, again to the liking of the audience, with “Greetings” by Half Pint.  Some classic Beres, Buju, and Wayne Wonder songs followed.  David then changed the vibes again with a big hip hop set consisting of songs by The Fugees and Black Rob to start out.

Early crowd at Cham concert

It had to be close to 3 o’clock when the 1st new music from artists of the day like Konshens and Mavado was featured in the dance.   During this part of the dance the selector English from Gyallis International took over the mixing duties as Mix Master continued as MC.  Then DJ Kash of WVEE Atlanta V-103FM came to the booth and challenged MMD to a tune for tune 45 clash which went on for a few rounds before the event’s format was resumed and the first performer was called to the stage.

Showtime

Atlanta dancehall star Dovey Magnum opened for Cham with a performance that earned cheers of support from Club Pisces.  She opened with a song dedicated to her father who passed away and after delivering 2 more singles, closed with an accapella delivery of “Kitty Tight” which was originally recorded on the Red Paint Riddim.

Cham’s appearance on stage attracted a front row of female admirers and earned energetic responses in general.  He remained present for about an hour and gave a very solid show.  Cham worked the entire stage from front to back and left to right, taking the time to perform most songs completely.  With a long catalog of hits he began with Ghetto Story, Man A Man, and Babylon Boy, before throwing it back to his pre-MTV/BET days and then advancing to the present day hits like ‘Tun Up,’ ‘Drop It‘  and ‘Wine.’  I have never seen Baby Cham disappoint.  This event definitely came together so kudos to the promoters Unitec Entertainment, as well as Mix Master David, English, and DJ Kash.  I am also looking forward to seeing Dovey Magnum do her thing again as she opens up for Beenie Man next month.

7 of dancehall’s Brightest Stars to shine at Sting

2
Supreme Promotions head honcho, Isaiah Laing has confirmed seven top acts for his big show down on boxing day, December 26th.  This year’s staging of dancehall’s greatest show over the globe, is anticipated to be the most elaborate staging ever.  The initial announcement confirmed the hottest commodity, Tommy Lee Sparta to headline the event.  This single entertainer is now the target that several artistes are firing lyrical shots at.  A whirlwind of lyrical warfare is adding more heat to the fire expected to blaze at Sting for the ultimate face off.

Tommy Lee Sparta to Headline Sting 2012

The lucky seven that are already signed for the Jamworld explosion include now rivals, Tommy Lee Sparta and Bounty Killa.  Tommy Lee Sparta out of respect initially steered away from a confrontation with the Killa.  This week’s new release, “Nyammy Lee” has pushed Uncle Demon back into war mode.  In an interview with The Weekend Star the Spartan King said,
“Why me can’t be a demon, why me can’t be that character.  Killa can’t study me, him can’t drain mi energy.  This morning mi wake up see new song name Nyammy Lee.  A who him a call so?  Mi huh fear him, that a mash potato and bully beef.  Anything a anything over Sting!”

Sting With A Difference – Supreme Promotions Banks On Young Reggae Acts

3
STING 2012 this year will have something a little different – young reggae acts.  The event’s promoters are hoping the difference will create the best Sting in the outing’s 29-year history.
In collaboration with DownSound Records, Sting will have a segment called Four The Hard Way, where rising stars Chronixx, Droop Lion, Jahsent and Iba Mahr will be the featured acts.  According to Supreme’s CEO, Isaiah Laing, “These four young men we predict to be the next big names of reggae, just wait and see. We have been doing this for years and have an eye for spotting true talent.”
Chronixx, given name Jamar McNaughton, has been steadily making progress with his career. This month sees the young musician embarking on his first overseas tour with performances for South America, Europe and California. His popularity internationally appears to have arrived more quickly than local interest has been able to keep pace with.
Kenya and Sweden have embraced the singer as his track, ‘Behind The Curtains’, is a hit there. With his music being heard more frequently now on Jamaican airwaves, his songs ‘Beat and A Mic,’ ‘Warrior,’ ‘Rain Music’ and ‘Odd Ras’ have all gained recognition, expanding his growing hometown fan-base.

Etana Celebrates Birth of Daughter, Releases Reggae EP

4

Congratulations to Etana on the November 1st birth of her daughter Nyla, the inspiration for her forthcoming album “Better Tomorrow.” The hit single from the album is entitled “Reggae.”

Soulful reggae singer, Etana releases the EP titled, Reggae on November 13. This three-track treat is an appetizer to her highly anticipated third album, A Better Tomorrow. The VP Records upcoming album is scheduled to arrive just in time for Black History Month, February 2013. The EP is now available on I-tunes and features the title track, Reggae, A Better Tomorrow and Foreplay To Love (Start Over). Etana thrills on all three compositions, with each reflecting different aspects of her undeniable talent.

Etana Reggae Ep cover

1. Reggae

Recording reggae was amazing, I could feel the passion, it was like making love to the music. I was engulfed in the rhythms from the drums, the bass and the guitar, they all brought on a sense of bringing new to life to the world”, says Etana. The intimate love ballad is slow, soft and seductive. The songstress smoothly puts a witty play on her words to express a raging love for the enthralling genre of music.

2. A Better Tomorrow

The title track for Etana’s upcoming third album is a definite preview of what is to come in a few months. The catchy mid tempo piece is inspirational and right up the songbird’s alley. Motivating, uplifting and purely positive lyrics flow from her crystal clear chords. As she belts each note you can feel her emotions blaring through the speakers. Etana was compelled to write this song after watching two young children in a documentary visit a dump to source food on a daily basis. The story brought the singer to tears, this pain encouraged her to pen each line on finding a brighter future for A better Tomorrow.

3. Foreplay To Love (Start Over)

A come clean story which many can relate to. “Lets start over , found a love that’s new, you’re not my only lover”, Etana croons of a love triangle she wants a second chance at making right. This confessional will appeal to many as it portrays a realistic dynamic of life.

These three tracks are fulfilling, yet they will enhance that crave for Etana’s full disc. The Free singer is ready to return to Centre stage and available for bookings starting December 1st.  Freemind music is her exclusive booking agent for more info visit www.EtanaThestrongOne.com
