Jah Cure Mix | Reggae Lover Podcast 87

Reggae Lover Podcast episode 87 features the voice of Jah Cure.

reggae

Born in October 1978 in Hanover, Jamaica, Jah Cure grew up in Kingston. He got the name Jah Cure from Capleton who he met while living in Kingston. Under the tutelage of Beres Hammond the hit song, King In This Jungle, a 1997 duet with Sizzla emerged.

Many of the songs Jah Cure released around that time became popular and won critical acclaim. Beres took him on tour to Europe and through the Caribbean with his Harmony House Records family. Cure emerged to be one of the brightest stars of 1997, which was an amazing year for reggae music and dancehall. The music of that period inspired me to start buying records and aspiring to be a selector. This mix focuses on songs from that time.

In November 1998 while driving in Montego Bay, Jah Cure got pulled over by the police and arrested. Charged with gun possession, robbery, and rape, he was found guilty and sentenced to 15 years in prison. He served in a correctional facility that had a digital recording studio that inmates could use. During his incarceration term, he recorded three albums and some singles, many of which topped charts in Jamaica.

Upon his release from jail on parole in July 2007 after serving 8 years of the sentence, Jah Cure came out with a fourth album, “Reflections… a new beginning.” Cure headlined and closed Reggae Sumfest that year in August. He signed to VP Records he launched Iyah Cure Productions.

Over the next several years he collaborated with top artists from the reggae, hip-hop, and R&B worlds. Jah Cure released the “Universal Cure” album in 2009 then came out with “The Cure,” which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album in 2016.

The end of this mix features of lovers rock of which Jah Cure has released a great deal of recently. My main focus was the original, undiluted, grassroots material. The songs from before his incarceration are more soulful, inspirational, and rebellious. I wish Jah Cure much continued success in the future. He has a beautiful family and lots going in the music business.

That’s it for reggae lover podcast episode 87. Look out for a bonus live audio episode coming your way from BobFest ATL. Thank you for listening to this show dedicated to reggae lovers everywhere. One Love!

DENNIS BROWN Double-Disc Tribute Album Will Drop June 3, 2016

DENNIS BROWN Double-Disc Tribute Album Will Drop June 3, 2016

Hailed by NPR Morning Edition as one of the 50 great voices of all time – the Jamaican musical icon Dennis Brown began his recording career at the tender age of 11 and released more than 75 albums during his all too short 42 years on Earth. Although the reggae legend passed away in 1999, his music and legacy live on.

VP Records, the world’s leading reggae label, will pay homage to Brown on June 3, 2016 with an extensive tribute album of his timeless hits and deep cuts titled, We Remember Dennis Brown. The 30-song collection features a wide and impressive range of reggae and R&B voices covering crucial Dennis Brown compositions. The set was produced by Jamaican legend Clive Hunt with an all-star team of musicians.
In February (Brown’s birthday month), VP Records premiered one song from the album every Friday for five weeks – including “Caress Me” from one of Jamaica’s brightest voices Romain Virgo, “Milk & Honey” by roots reggae rockers Raging Fyah, “Bloody City” from the Caribbean’s soulful songstress Jah9, “Promised Land” from Hawaiian reggae band The Green and “Have You Ever” by R&B powerhouse Marsha Ambrosius.

In addition to these power hitters, We Remember Dennis Brown will feature an array of singers from Brown’s native country and across the globe who he influenced. Jamaica’s latest crop of stars (including Jah Cure, Gyptian, Iba Mahr, Kabaka Pyramid, Kelissa, Keznamdi, Chronixx and Jesse Royal) as well as the island’s icons who worked with Brown (like reggae vocalists Bushman and Freddie McGregor) all offer their contributions. Freddie’s son Chino McGregor and Christopher Ellis, the talented UK-based singer and offspring of Alton Ellis (another one of Brown’s musical mentors and confidants), both deliver powerful renditions of Brown’s classics.

New Zealand rockers also create a breezy rendition of “If I Had The World.” The worldly collection proves that his universal sound transcends all boundaries of time, race and creed. Each artist adds their own original flair to Brown’s profound soul-stirring sound – touching the hearts of new and old fans alike on this unique multi-disc collection. We Remember Dennis Brown will include deluxe packaging as well as extensive liner notes on the belated legend.

Dennis-Brown

DENNIS BROWN

Dennis Brown was greatly influenced by American balladeers such as Sam Cooke, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin as well as Jamaican singers like Delroy Wilson and John Holt. At only 12-years-old, he cut his first hit “No Man Is An Island” at Clement “Coxsone” Dodd’s famous Studio One. Within the years, he was a force to be reckoned with musically – dubbed the “Boy Wonder of Jamaica” and “Crown Prince of Reggae.” Before he was 16, he had worked with Jamaica’s top recording artists (Alton Ellis, Horace Andy) and producers of the time (Prince Buster, Dennis Alcapone, Winston “Niney” Holness and Vincent “Randy” Chin).

In the 1970s, he worked closely with producer Joe Gibbs and released multiple albums. One of the album’s songs “Money in my Pocket,” peaked at #14 on UK Top 40 chart becoming one of the biggest international hits in Jamaica’s history. This success landed him the cover of the NME’s February 1979 issue. Enthusiastically adapting to the new dancehall era, Brown released a huge amount of work throughout the 1980s recording with genre’s major producers like King Jammy on Brown’s 1986 album The Exit and Gussie Clarke in 1989 with the Gregory Isaacs duet “Big All Round” and the album Unchallenged. He continued to record prolifically in the 1990s before his passing. His 1994 album Light My Fire and 2001 release Let Me Be the One were both nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album.

Reggae Sumfest to Recognize Beres for Contribution to Jamaican music

“We at Reggae Sumfest are very pleased to be presenting this great reggae artiste and felt that he deserves to be recognised for his enormous contribution to the growth and development of our music. A Reggae Sumfest without Beres never truly feels complete,” Gourzong added.

Hammond, who is easily one of Jamaica’s most prolific singers ever and who has a massive fan base, will be making his return to the festival after a three-year hiatus.

Known for his soulful voice and eclectic lovers’ rock ballads, Hammond’s discography consists of at least 18 albums and six compilations.

He is expected to wow the Sumfest audience with his timeless hits, among them Step Aside, Can’t Stop A Man From Trying, Standing In My Way, and She Loves Me Now, to name a few.

“Beres loves to perform at Sumfest because of the exceptional reception he gets. It’s been a while since he has graced the stage at Catherine Hall, and he has made it clear that he will be delivering one of the best sets locally, come July,” said Hammond’s manager Mervis Walsh.

Reggae Sumfest, set for July 17-23 at Catherine Hall in Montego Bay, promises to be an explosive affair featuring top acts such as international sensations R Kelly and Nicki Minaj, as well as Jamaican stars CeCile, Tifa, Kip Rich, Protoje, Jah Cure, Half Pint, and Konshens.

The Label Behind Reggae Phenom Jah Cure

3

The tremendous success of international reggae artiste Jah Cure is not based on pure luck but a combination of organization planning and expertise. The Danger Zone Music Group (DZMG) emerged in the year 2000 out of a need to provide positive and quality music to the masses and Jah Cure has benefited from this aim throughout his career.

Headed by Delmar ‘Della Danger’ Drummond, DZMG in the past has managed the careers of Ce’CileJigsy King,  Mickey Pelpa and Cutty Corn but now focuses on the careers of Jah Cure and Hezron and is also exclusive booking agents for both artistes. With the Danger Zone Sound System as its nucleus, DZMG has over the last 9 years maintained a presence in the local and international music market churning out high quality music.

Not only is DZMG a management company but it’s also a production house and is credited with releasing the ‘Journeys’ Riddim’, produced by Della Danger which featured Journey by Jah Cure, Ce’Cile’s Ride or die, Plant It by Jigsy King featuring Ce’Cile, Show Off by Jigsy King & Tony Curtis, and Poochie Loo by Cutty Corn.

The ‘Journeys Riddim’ followed on the success of the ‘Jamdown Riddim’ of 2007 which won the Best Reggae Compilation Album award at the 2008 RIAJAM awards also giving Della Danger the Executive Producer‘s Award.  And the ‘Wipe Out Riddim’ which featured hits from Beenie Man and Buju Banton. In the summer of this year DZMG will release its latest reggae riddim called ‘Twilight’. The riddim will feature some of Jamaica’s top reggae artistes.

In 2009 DZMG in collaboration with SoBe Entertainment out of Florida released Jah Cure’s Universal Cure album. The album peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Top Reggae Albums Chart and just missed out on being nominated for a Reggae Grammy. DZMG also released Ce’Cile’s ‘Waiting’ album. The album featured production credits from renowned producers Cordell ‘Skatta’ Burrell, Steelie & Cleevie, Lloyd ‘Baby G’ James, Scot Storch and several other top producers.

Fast forward to 2010 and Danger Zone is still going strong, with their top flight artiste Jah Cure winning three EME Awards and now working on his next album slated for a summer release, Danger Zone’s work speaks for itself.

The Excellence In Music and Entertainment (EME) Awards Will Be Staged on Thursday February 4, at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel

2

The prestigious Excellence In Music and Entertainment (EME)  Awards is back and this year’s staging of the event will be  on Thursday February 4, at the Gardens at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, 81 Knutsford Boulevard, Kingston. The EME Awards is the brain child of popular radio personality Richard ‘Richie B’ Burgess. He created this award show to honor the players in the local music industry, both past and present, for their hard work in creating and maintaining excellence within our rich musical culture. The EME Awards is a non-profit venture.

Since its humble beginnings back in  2005, as a small in studio production, the Excellence In Music  and Entertainment (EME) Awards has grown to become one of the most eagerly anticipated events on the local entertainment calendar , due primarily,to its high production standards. The EME  Awards has  garnered unwavering support and popularity through the years and has attracted coverage from both the local and international media. Last year, the presence of America’s  BETJ Channel, provided quite a fillip for the EMEs and their repeat airings of the event has  definitely added to the excitement both here and abroad.  Over 85% of the awardees were in attendance for both the 2008 and 2009  staging and the organizers hope to improve on that this year. This is a clear indication of the respect the industry has for this event. 2010 promises to be even bigger and better.
