You're in love with 1990s reggae - admit it!  You have fond memories of being at parties and hearing Buju, Shabba, Supercat, and Beres played out at length which necessitated a proper slow wine segment, dance partner or not.  The soundtrack of the night at Rocksteady ATL typically includes 1990's Reggae Music, Top Songs and Riddims from the Dancehall, especially the one drop anthems.

3. Truths and rights from the dancehall veteran, Ken Serious!

4. DJ’s using real turntables and spinning real vinyl.

ATLANTA ROOTS REGGAE EVENT MOVES TO NEW NIGHT, BIGGER VENUE

For the past year, Rocksteady ATL, the only roots reggae event held regularly in the entire city of Atlanta, has been celebrated on the first Sunday of each month at Downtown Atlanta’s The Sound Table, located on Edgewood Avenue. Now the festivities will be moving to a bigger venue on a new night – Fridays, the night of the week perhaps most synonymous with going out and having a good time.

The new venue is Studio No. 7, at 393 Marietta Street in Atlanta, Georgia 30313. Rocksteady ATL will henceforth be held on the first Friday of each month, with the inaugural show hosted by Red Carpet Shelley at Studio No 7, booked for Friday September 4th, starting at 9pm and ending at 2am. Popular acts Highlanda Sound, DJ Passport, DJ Roots Queen and SuperPEC have already signed on for the event’s re-launch at the new venue.

In its first incarnation, Rocksteady ATL rapidly developed a strong reputation as a unique old-school reggae soiree powered by some of the best reggae roots acts in the South. At the new and bigger venue, guests will continue to enjoy world-class mixology along with critically acclaimed music in the same unique tradition that nightlife enthusiasts simply can’t find at any other spot in the city.

There is a $5 cover charge, with ladies admitted free until 12am. For more information about the bigger and better Rocksteady ATL, contact Kahlil Wonda at 404-552-0492 or email rocksteadyatl@gmail.com.

Rocksteady ATL Day Party – July 5, 2015

The Rocksteady ATL event takes place on the first Sunday of each month as an alternative to the mainstream dancehall parties which have become commonplace.   DJ Passport and Kahlil Wonda’s vision was to create a nightlife option to celebrate authentic reggae music in the city of Atlanta, and provide an uplifting experience where patrons can enjoy classic roots reggae, dub, and lovers rock music combined with the best quality conscious reggae of today.

Voted Best of Atlanta 2014 by Atlanta Magazine and located at 483 Edgewood Avenue near the intersection of Boulevard in the rejuvenated, historic Old-4th Ward district of downtown Atlanta, the Sound Table is as well known for its ambiance and acoustic properties as it is for fabulous cocktails and world-class mixology.

The highly anticipated debut of Dubwise Atlanta did not disappoint. There was an air of love and unity flowing as Atlantans came together for the special occasion, giving roots reggae a chance to flourish once again in town. On this night I had the pleasure of playing alongside the international roots master Aba Shaka and out of Kingston, Yaardcore, one of the selectors credited with catalyzing and supporting Jamaica's current reggae revival. I began my round with classic shots from the Tuff Gong and Studio One labels, took excursions on the Heptones’ “We’re Gonna Fight” and the M-16 riddims, and featured some contemporary dubwise selections with Chuck Fender and Everton Blender because variety is the spice of life. Listen as the crowd gathers near the stage on the dance floor to sing along and dance to the melodies and deep sub-bass brought forth by the Space 2 sound system. Special vibes for a special night in Atlanta dancehall. Look out for Rocksteady ATL on July 5th, August 2nd, September 6th and every 1st Sunday at the Sound Table.

Rocksteady ATL hosts the debut of DUBWISE ATLANTA, Sat. June 13 @ Space 2 (The Sound Table)

5

The organizers of “Rocksteady ATL,” myself and The Honorary Citizen, will host the debut of Dubwise Atlanta on Saturday June 13th at the Sound Table’s SPACE 2 (485 Edgewood Avenue, Atlanta, GA) with Yaadcore from Kingston, Jamaica alongside Aba Shaka, Love People, and Highlanda Sound.

The original Dubwise Jamaica is a Roots Dub Reggae session every Wednesday in the city of Kingston, created to preserve the roots in the Dancehall & spread the message of love through music.  Dubwise Jamaica guarantees strictly original & rootical selections all night coming from the vein stream & not the main stream, resurrecting songs that haven’t been heard in decades as well fresh selections from the new and upcoming Reggae artists.

Rocksteady ATL hosts Dubwise Atlanta at Space 2, Saturday June 13th, 8pm

Rocksteady ATL hosts Dubwise Atlanta at Space 2, Saturday June 13th, 8pm

Strictly roots and culture vibrations, with no slackness. Tunes played in a dubwise style, for their full duration, with messages of upliftment delivered live over the mic.

In December 2013, Yaadcore, the Jamaican selector known for his Reggae Aroma mixtape series, began holding a weekly, Wednesday-night session inside Kingston’s Whitebones Grill with the principles listed above.  Dubwise Jamaica quickly became a magnet for similarly-minded selectors, including such foundation DJs as Rory Gilligan of Stone Love and Danny Dread of Stereo Mars and Volcano sound system fame. Jamaica’s young reggae stars Chronixx, Protoje, Kabaka Pyramid, Jesse Royal and Micah Shemaiah were among its earliest supporters, passing through both as performers and just to hol’ a vibes, and it soon attracted veteran artists like Lutan Fyah, Mikey General and even Ninjaman, as well as international acts like Pressure Busspipe (St. Thomas) and Ziggi Recado (St. Eustatius).

A year and a half after its launch, Dubwise Jamaica has become an international brand representing what many see as a return to a more pure and natural style of playing reggae (as opposed to the fast-paced juggling style preferred by most of today’s Jamaican DJs).  Yaadcore has teamed with selectors Corey Chase and DJ Rampage to launch Dubwise Miami, a weekly session at Coyo Taco in the Wynwood Arts district. Although Yaadcore’s schedule only permits him to appear in Miami about once a month, each Wednesday night the backroom of the fashionable taqueria becomes the “Coyo Dub Lounge,” attracting a loyal crowd as well as fellow DJs such as house DJ Armand Van Helden.  Artist Kabaka Pyramid dropped in recently to perform.

Yaadcore has brought Dubwise sessions to New York City, Washington DC and Puerto Rico (San Jaun, Santurce and Rincon) over the past few months and relaunched Dubwise Jamaica in a new location following a brief hiatus.  In Yaadcore’s view, he’s laying a foundation for a movement that can spread consciousness and upliftment through roots music whether he’s in the building or not.
