After taking 10 years off from recording, Big Mountain teams up with VPAL, the distribution arm of the world’s leading reggae label VP Records, to give the world great music once again. Their new studio album Perfect Summer is a refreshing collection of their signature sound and features a stellar cover of The Beatles “Here Comes The Sun.” The group will also embark on a world tour in support of the album over the summer. Dates are TBA.

Big Mountain has an impressive catalog of hits and is internationally known for their 1994 iconic reggae cover of Peter Frampton‘s “Baby I Love Your Way.”

At the time, the song was featured in the blockbuster film Reality Bites, reached No. 6 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, No. 1 on Mainstream Top 40, and No. 2 in the UK. The single still continues to receive over 600,000 Spotify streams per month and is heard on the radio airwaves today.

Big Mountain consists of five members. Lead vocalist Quino is of Mexican/ Irish decent and incorporates Spanish and English lyrics into their music. Michael Hyde, former member of Ziggy Marley‘s band, plays keyboards. Danny Lopilato sings vocals and plays guitar, Montego Bay native Paul Kastick is on drums and Southern Californian Mike Ortiz on bass.

When Jesse Royal was only a cub, the Lord revealed to his mother that she would have to release one of her sons to the world, proclaiming “he will be a psalmist, declaring righteousness and justice throughout creation.”

As Jesse matured into a young lion, his mother observed in him a strong sense of integrity and a natural ability to positively affect those around him. But it was his deep spirituality, passion for life and unique connection to music that would convince her that he was being molded to be used by the Creator.

Introducing Jesse Royal

Jesse David Leroi Grey, born April 29, 1989, enjoyed his early years in the hills of Maroon Town and the District of Orange in St. James before moving to Kingston in the late 90’s with his Mother and brother to join his Father.

As fate would have it, Royal developed a special relationship with Daniel ‘Bambaata’ Marley (son of Ziggy Marley) at school. This friendship with Daniel proved to be fuel to the fire as they both shared a deep passion for music and football; they naturally became brothers with different mothers, spending most of their childhoods together.

As these cubs became lions so grew the friendship and devotion to music. They began composing and creating their own music with the help of longtime friend Curt White and thus their musical journey began.

After Jesse returned home from schooling abroad, a relationship with high school friend and young producer Kareem ‘Remus’ Burrell (son of Philip ‘Fatis’ Burrell) reignited.  They began creating and composing music together also which developed into a Movement as they shared similar views on the social state of Jamaica.
Blessed with a voice that captures the pain and hunger of a ‘downtrodden’ people; Royal’s militant character and profound lyricism caught the heart of heralded reggae producer, Philip ‘Fatis’ Burrell. Fatis Burrell, affectionately called ‘Father’ had a great and pure impact on the ‘old soul’ of Jesse; as he credits him as an invaluable inspiration and one of the most influential individuals that he has ever encountered.
Jesse Royal recently released his debut mixtape, ‘Misheni’ and is currently putting the final touches on his debut album with Kareem Burrell of the XTM.Nation.

Gramps to Drop Country/R&B Album with Ziggy Marley and Music Soulchild

Reggae crooner Gramps is still on a musical high, this after a whirlwind year in 2009 which culminated with him winning the “Album of the Year” at the 2010 EME Awards in Jamaica for his debut album “Two Sides Of My Heart Vol 1.” The 6″2 inch former football superstar is currently in studios recording tracks for his next big project – a Country and R&B album that he is passionate about. The disc, tentatively titled “2 Sides Of My Heart Vol. 2” will feature an all-star cast including collaborations with R&B singer Musiq Soulchild and reggae superstar Ziggy Marley while Willie Lat from LA, Shannon Sanders and Blu Miller from Nashville will produce a few tracks. The disc hit stores later this year.

“It’s like coming full circle for me because I have always had a fascination with Country and R&B music. This is my second solo project and I am feeling really great about how things are coming together so far,” he confided.

The album promises to be an eclectic blend of R&B and Country songs that he says will make a bold statement once it is completed. While a country and R&B album is not something most people expect from a reggae crooner, as he explains, he is doing the album to keep the fun going in the industry and to do the unexpected.

“I wanna have fun with the music without becoming predictable… plus it has been a dream of my father to see this day” he confessed. “It is a project that my entire family is very proud of and they have been very supportive.”

Among the featured tracks that are already completed are “Delicate Balance,” “Jamaica” and “Better Man.”

While his label Dada Son Entertainment will assume responsibility for the project, he is open to a distribution deal with a major label.

“The success of the disc, especial in the international market will depend on how much we put in marketing but a major label would definitely help to take the project to the next level. Distribution wise, they have an established network in place that could help to get the product to the large number of music lovers out there. I am confident that with the muscle of a major on board as a distributor, I could move 500,000 units” he declared.

Aside from working on his own new solo album, Gramps is juggling multiple projects. He is in studio’s recording with his brothers and sister from Morgan Heritage. He is also working with J Boog from Hawaii on his new album and is helping his dad Denroy Morgan (I’ll Do Anything For You) on a soon to be released autobiography.

“Right now I am multi-tasking on various projects which is something I am completely at home with. I am working on a special project for Disney and looking forward to doing some stuff on the big screen which will be coming soon.”

Ziggy Marley Will Release First Children’s Reggae Album May 5

Tuff Gong Worldwide will release Ziggy Marley’s third solo album, Family Time, on May 5. Marley produced the album with legendary producer Don Was. The album will feature a variety of family and friends including Rita Marley (Ziggy’s mother), Cedella Marley (sister), Judah Marley (daughter), Paul Simon, Jack Johnson, Willie Nelson, Toots Hibberts, Elizabeth Mitchell, Laurie Berkner, Paula Fuga and two stories narrated by Jamie Lee Curtis.

“Growing up music was an important part of my childhood,” Marley says. “I see it being just as important in my children and all children’s growth and development. Music helps children to grow with open minds and open hearts and this is my message. This record represents my daily family life and is inspired by my three-year-old daughter Judah and baby Gideon. It was a joy to make and opened up new avenues in my creativity. Family Time is for all families and especially the world family.”

Cherine Anderson’s EP Release Making Waves

The wait is over…The Introduction ARRIVES!

Singer-Songwriter Cherine Anderson releases her EP, The Introduction-Dubstyle, via
Dancehall Soul Productions/Zlink Entertainment.

The East Kingston, Jamaica soulstress started 2009 with a bang by performing at three Barack Obama Inaugural Balls, performing at the World Special Olympics in Idaho, and is currently on tour supporting her first official release, The Introduction-Dubstyle EP. After spending the last seven months touring the US, Australia and Europe with the likes of Sly & Robbie, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Slightly Stoopid and Pepper, it’s clear that Anderson has been working hard and entertaining many fans with her infectious Dancehall Soul sound.

The Introduction-Dubstyle, available on iTunes, is a perfect combination of dancehall, soul and lover’s rock. The nine track EP boasts outstanding production from Grammy Award winning producers Sly & Robbie, hit makers David Norland (Madonna, Janet Jackson), Christopher Birch, Gussie Clarke and legendary mixing engineer Errol Brown (Bob Marley, Ziggy Marley), among others. The multi-faceted Anderson plays triple duty on the project, performing, writing on all nine songs and co-producing several tracks.

Anderson’s vocals are remarkable from song to song. Her powerful voice soars on anthems like “Shine On Jamaica” and the female anthem “Talk if Yuh Talking”. With lyrics cutting particular hard on the inspiring “Shine On Jamaica”, Anderson speaks to the realities of young black girls in the harsh inner city.

Her writing is thought provoking without being preachy.  The talent combines intellect with soulfulness, but never loses that feminine touch. Her youth is exposed on the sassy “Tuff Enuff” where she flirts with the boys and at the same time empowers the sisters.
In between her signature flirtatious giggles she asks,

“baby talk is cheap/only action speaks/words go skin deep so how bad do you want me?”
-“Tuff Enuff”

This reggaeton/dancehall flavored track picks up the tempo and will definitely make you move your feet, while chart-topping hits “Coming Over Tonight” and “Kingston State of Mind” should find favor with the hardcore roots lovers. Fans of the ‘King Tubbys’ dub-era will appreciate the extended drum and bass mixes on several cuts. The Introduction-Dubstyle is definitely an album for all ages.

Shortly after its online release, The Introduction-Dubstyle is already receiving rave reviews. According to CDBABY.COM, Anderson’s EP “…is strong throughout. It’s really great music that respects the traditions of reggae’s past, yet sounds totally modern.” As one of the most popular online retail sites for independent music, CDBABY.COM selected Anderson’s EP as their Editor’s Pick and will honored her debut project as their featured Editor’s Pick on their website on February 20.
